Climate action plan

October 2026

Our commitment

Made for the World (MFTW) commits to supporting the global ambition to limit warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement. As a certified B Corporation™, a member of 1% for the Planet, and a signatory to Design Declares, we recognise our responsibility to act – not just to advocate for environmental change through the clients we serve, but to embed it into how we operate as a business.

We are a small, remote studio with a naturally low carbon footprint. We do not own premises or operate physical infrastructure. This does not diminish our responsibility – it means our emissions reduction actions are achievable and our choices carry clear leverage.

This plan is grounded in our first formal carbon measurement, completed retrospectively in September 2026 using the SME Climate Hub Small Business Carbon Calculator (v2.0, powered by Equipoise), which follows the GHG Protocol methodology. We intend to repeat this measurement annually.

Our baseline: 2024–25 emissions

Total: 4.13 tonnes CO₂e (financial year 1 August 2024 – 31 July 2025)

tCO₂e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) is the standard unit for measuring greenhouse gas emissions – all greenhouse gases are converted to the equivalent warming impact of carbon dioxide.

Source: Made for the World Emission Report 2024–25, generated using the SME Climate Hub Small Business Carbon Calculator v2.0 (powered by Equipoise), run on 21 September 2026. Methodology: GHG Protocol.

All emissions fall under Scope 3 (value chain emissions). We have no Scope 1 or Scope 2 emissions, as we operate fully remotely with no owned premises or purchased energy.

Category Emissions
Cat 3.1 – Purchased goods and services 1.83 tCO₂e
Cat 3.7 – Employee commuting and homeworking 1.77 tCO₂e
Cat 3.6 – Business travel 0.53 tCO₂e
Total 4.13 tCO₂e

Emissions intensity

  • 0.02 kg CO₂e per £ revenue
  • 1.38 tonnes CO₂e per person

MFTW has no employees in the formal sense – the calculator counts both directors as the workforce, since we are the people operating the business, travelling, and working from home.

For context, the UK average per worker is approximately 6–7 tonnes CO₂e per year (source: SME Climate Hub benchmarking data). Our per-person figure is well below average, reflecting the structural choices we have already made: remote working, a four-day week, public transport for business travel, and renewable-energy hosting.

Our largest category – purchased goods and services – is being actively addressed through our Supplier Log and green procurement approach. The homeworking category is now the second largest; improving home energy efficiency and renewable energy tariffs are the primary levers for reducing this.

Next measurement: 2025–26

Our second annual measurement is under way. The accounts for financial year 2025–26 have just closed, and we will run the SME Climate Hub Small Business Carbon Calculator v2.0 against them shortly. Once complete, we will publish our 2025–26 emissions figures, alongside the first year-on-year comparison against this baseline, on this page.

Our target

Reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 10% year-on-year, measured annually against the previous year’s baseline.

Applied from our 2024–25 baseline of 4.13 tCO₂e, this target trajectory is:

Year Target
2024–25 (baseline) 4.13 tCO₂e
2025–26 3.72 tCO₂e
2026–27 3.35 tCO₂e
2027–28 3.01 tCO₂e
2028–29 2.71 tCO₂e
2029–30 2.44 tCO₂e

By 2030, this represents a reduction of approximately 41% from our baseline – broadly consistent with the rate of reduction the IPCC and the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative say is needed to keep warming within 1.5°C: roughly halving emissions by 2030 relative to a recent baseline. This is our own target aligned to that pathway; it has not been independently validated by SBTi.

This target will be reviewed at each annual measurement. If emissions fall faster than projected (for example through a supplier switch or new working practice), we will adjust the target accordingly rather than treating it as a ceiling.

Our actions

What we are already doing

Digital footprint and hosting

  • All client websites are hosted on Krystal – a B Corp-certified web host, powered by 100% renewable energy and verified by the Green Web Foundation
  • We measure the carbon impact of our websites through our partnership with Digital Carbon Online (DCO), built into every project proposal as standard. Four sites we have designed and built currently rank in DCO’s top 50 lowest-carbon websites
  • We are working towards carbon-neutral ratings across our full client portfolio

Ways of working

  • Fully remote, home-based studios – eliminating daily commuting and office energy use
  • Four-day week – a structural reduction in resource consumption
  • All UK business travel by public transport
  • Video calls over in-person travel wherever practical
  • When working outside home offices, we choose B Corp-certified or independently owned co-working spaces (including x+why, Work.Life, and Stocked)

Procurement

  • Green mobile provider: Ecotalk (Ethical Consumer #1-rated UK mobile network, powered by green energy)
  • Green email and workspace: Google Workspace (committed to 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030)
  • All supplier selections documented in our Supplier Log, with environmental credentials assessed for each

Community and offsetting

Actions underway in 2026

Formalise our sustainability plan

We committed in our 2025 Impact Report to developing a formalised sustainability plan. This Climate Action Plan is the first step in that process. We have completed our first carbon measurement and joined the SME Climate Hub.

Target: Repeat carbon measurement annually using the SME Climate Hub calculator.

Carbon Literacy certification

Both directors will complete the Carbon Literacy Project‘s accredited training for digital and technology professionals. This will deepen our understanding of emissions in our sector and strengthen the conversations we have with clients and peers.

Target: Both directors to achieve Carbon Literacy certification by December 2026.

Partner on a project targeting SDG 13 (Climate Action)

A goal carried forward from 2024: to work on at least one project where climate action is the primary mission. Through our Impact Compass, we assess every new project for its real-world impact – and we are actively prioritising opportunities in the climate sector.

Target: Engage at least one new partner focused on SDG 13 by 31 December 2026.

Extend green procurement

Our Supplier Log now covers all active suppliers with environmental and human rights assessments. We will:

  • Explore consolidating domain management to Krystal at renewal (currently with Ionos), to align with an already-assessed B Corp supplier
  • Refresh Supplier Induction Surveys for suppliers not assessed in the last two years
  • Add environmental criteria to our annual supplier review cycle

Target: All active suppliers in Supplier Log with environmental assessments completed by December 2026. Domain management reviewed at next renewal.

Review cloud services and software

We will review our software subscriptions annually to identify where green or more responsible alternatives exist, and eliminate services we do not actively use.

Target: Annual review completed each April, starting April 2027.

Actions planned for 2027 onwards

  • Set quantified near-term emissions reduction sub-targets by category (purchased goods, homeworking, travel) once two years of measurement data are available
  • Explore joining the SME Climate Hub’s structured decarbonisation programme
  • Develop a client-facing position on sustainable web design, building on our DCO partnership and our Impact Experience (IX) Design methodology
  • Pursue a project specifically targeting SDG 13 if not secured by end of 2026

Resources allocated

As a two-person studio, our resource allocation is straightforward:

  • Staff time: Both directors are responsible for implementing this plan. Environmental performance is a standing item at our annual board meeting. Carbon measurement and supplier review are assigned to both directors jointly.
  • Financial: 1% for the Planet membership ensures at least 1% of annual revenue is directed to environmental causes. Carbon Literacy training costs will be covered as professional development. The SME Climate Hub calculator is free to use.
  • Technical: SME Climate Hub Small Business Carbon Calculator (free). Digital Carbon Online partnership (existing). Krystal hosting (existing).

Stakeholder engagement

MFTW engages stakeholders on climate in the following ways:

  • Clients: We discuss the environmental footprint of websites as part of every project, and encourage all partners to measure and address their site’s carbon impact through Digital Carbon Online. Carbon verification is built into our project proposals as standard.
  • Suppliers: Our Supplier Induction Survey asks about environmental practices, energy use, and credentials. Our Supplier Log documents environmental assessments for all active suppliers.
  • Design community: We are a Design Declares signatory and share our approach to sustainable design through events, networking, and through the publication of our Impact Experience (IX) Design methodology.
  • Wider public: This Climate Action Plan is published on our website and will be included in our next annual Impact Report, which is publicly accessible.

Progress reporting

Progress against this plan will be reported annually in our Impact Report, including:

  • Total emissions for the year (tCO₂e)
  • Progress against the 10% year-on-year reduction target
  • Status of each action listed above
  • Any updates to targets or actions

This plan is reviewed every 36 months (next review: April 2029) and updated whenever material changes occur in our operations or emissions profile.
